It will be extremely difficult for Ukraine’s partners to assemble two full divisions of Leopard 2 tanks to send them to Ukraine, as they recently promised Zelensky’s team. This statement was made by the head of the German Defense Ministry Boris Pistorius.
Bloomberg reports.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine will not receive all the promised tanks from Ukraine’s partners.
Germany and Portugal are the only two countries that have committed to sending the Leopard 2A6 version to Ukraine: 14 tanks were promised by the government in Berlin and three by Portugal.
We will not reach the strength of the battalion, says the German minister. He also pointed out that the official Warsaw managed to assemble about 30 units of the older version of the Leopard 2, which is almost enough for a standard Ukrainian battalion of 31 units, however, according to Pistorius, many of them are in poor condition and need to be repaired before they can be deployed. According to the head of the German Defense Ministry, these tanks will arrive in Ukraine only at the end of April.
What is known about the supply of tanks for the Armed Forces
Recently, German leader Olaf Scholz officially confirmed that Berlin and other partners of Ukraine will be able to form two combat tank divisions for the Armed Forces of Ukraine as soon as possible. In addition, it became known that the United States plans to provide the Armed Forces with 31 units of M1 Abrams tanks. On February 14, the head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin, named the countries that began preparations for the transfer of Leopard 2 combat tanks to Ukraine or assumed the corresponding obligations. According to him, these are Germany, Poland, Canada, Portugal, Spain, Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands. On February 15, the Netherlands and Denmark announced that they would not transfer their tanks to Ukraine.
